The update of ultimate clarification (and length)
– Sat, Sep 02, 2017 at 01:28:54 AM
This is a no-nonsense update (ok, fine, maybe a little bit of nonsense, but enough about that for now). Here's what you will find here (in order):
1. How to add on the new expansions without changing tiers. Yes, split shipment will be possible.
2. What to do if you switched tiers to February and now regret your decision
3. An explanation for the changes in shipping up to this point
4. NSFW Update (WHICH IS NOW 52 CARDS IN A TUCK BOX THANKS TO OUR MOST RECENT SG! YAY!)
5. A clarification of every single tier that has been backed throughout the entirety of this campaign. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion.
So, with that, let's begin.
HOW TO ADD ON THE NEW EXPANSIONS WITHOUT CHANGING TIERS
The new expansions have caused quite a stir, and with good reason. They are rainbows, and dragons, and cuteness, and destruction, and so much more, and they don't ship until February. So what's a Unicorn Lover to do when they can't get all the Unicorns?
Well, here's what I've come up with:
-
IF you select the Apocalypse Pack only, it will ship with your order.
-
IF you select one of the other expansions and you backed a Nov or Dec pledge tier, it will be split into a separate shipment, which will be sent to you around February of 2018 (regardless of your tier).
-
IF you select any of the expansions and you backed a Feb pledge tier, your expansions will all be shipped with your regular order.
As a reminder, add-on shipping is free for US backers and $5 for anyone else. This will still cover your split shipments, so you don't have to worry about additional shipping charges. To clarify, since this has caused confusion, the $5 for add-on shipping is in addition to your pledge shipping, not instead of.
One more note on this: The apocalypse pack is, in fact, $5 vs $10 for the other two. This is partially because I don't know what I'm doing and partially because the new ones include the cost to ship them.
Next topic:
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SWITCHED TIERS TO FEBRUARY AND NOW REGRET YOUR DECISION
The last thing I want is for people to spend 3 months thinking about how much they hate me before the game arrives. I'd prefer you channel your anger and frustration elsewhere (possibly into your game nights with your friends while playing Unstable Unicorns a few months earlier). As such, I am reopening the $50 December tier for the next 24 hours or so. This will be the last opportunity to back or switch back to that tier. If you need clarification of what comes in that tier, see the last part of this update :)
WHY HAVE THE SHIPPING COSTS CHANGED THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN?
When this project started, I was new to Kickstarter. I didn't know what to do with add-ons, stretch goals, EU friendliness, etc. The game was 116 cards in a small box that barely fit them, and I thought that was all Unstable Unicorns would ever be. Since then, the base game has become 135 cards in a magnetic box that can hold 225 cards, I've added on numerous expansions, I've made the campaign EU friendly, and I've expedited timelines, etc. in the hopes of keeping every promise I've made in this campaign. I'm far from doing everything right, but I'm certainly doing my best to course correct each day as things go astray, and the reality is that we are going to take a hit on shipping overall on this project (even with the higher numbers that we're charging). I thought it would be good to explain this, since it has come up a number of times.
NSFW UPDATE (please avert your eyes if you don't want to see it)
The NSFW Pack will now officially be 52 cards in a tuck box! This means that you will be able to shuffle together 2 NSFW packs and play a whole game that way :D
Here are a few more coloring book pages that show some of the NSFW card artwork
And that brings me to the last (and possibly most important) part of this update:
A CLARIFICATION OF EVERY SINGLE TIER THAT HAS BEEN BACKED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRETY OF THIS CAMPAIGN
Below, you will find a list of every tier that has existed (some for 4 backers, others for thousands, most of them because I'm bad at making tiers). Either way, you can reference by month and pledge name to find exactly what you pledged for, and what your tier now contains :)
Before I get into it, here are a few clarifications:
- NSFW Pack is officially 52 cards in a tuck box for EVERYONE. No matter which tier you selected (or if you get it as an add-on), it will be exactly the same.
- KSE Cards stands for kickstarter exclusive- these are the two (and hopefully soon to be 3!) exclusive cards in this campaign that will not be available at all afterwards. They are already included in most tiers, but if they are not included in your tier, they are available as an add-on item if you want them.
- Kickstarter doesn't allow me to change what the tier rewards say, but this is exactly what you will get if you pledged for any of the levels below. If any of the specific items in your tier get upgraded, you will benefit from that automatically, but otherwise these tiers will not be changing from this point.

(NOTE: This tier only comes with one of each of the last 3 expansions, not two of each. If you would like a second set, they will be available as add-on items- see above).
The very last thing I'd like to do is just say thank you one more time, not only for your support of this project, but also of your patience with me in figuring everything out. I know this campaign has been a disaster logistically since day one, but it is the best disaster I've ever created.
I have worked on this campaign from roughly 7AM til 2AM pretty much every day since it started, and I haven't lost the energy to keep doing that because you have all remained so invested and so passionate about Unstable Unicorns. I had figured out about 20% of what I needed to know going into this campaign, and the other 80% has been a beast to tackle, but there is no way I could've handled this without you.
The last two weeks have been life-changing. I have gotten to see my creation that started as doodles in a notebook and an excel spreadsheet turn into a massive game with an incredible community behind it. I've done my best to keep the campaign interesting and to create as many expansions and interesting upgrades to the game as I can, but the end of this project won't be the end Unstable Unicorns. I will take every comment and suggestion I've received to heart, and even if I can't fulfill every request in this Kickstarter, I plan to continue investing, designing, and creating content for the Unstable Unicorns universe that you've helped me create.
You've heard me say it before, and you'll hear me say it again, but no number of times will ever be enough: thank you.
2-player Unstable Unicorns is here!
– Thu, Aug 31, 2017 at 01:26:37 AM
Unstable Unicorns is officially a 2-player friendly game now :D After much finagling, we've created a modified set of rules that make the game super fun with just 2 people. Be warned: I make a lot of strange noises in this video, ranging from an exasperated baby to a dying cat.
I said in the video that a list of removed cards would be provided below, but I realize in hindsight that a list of card names would not be particularly meaningful. So, instead, I am providing a general idea of what has been removed. First, all Basic Unicorns and cards that reference them are not in the two-player game (which is nice, because it gives you the opportunity to see more of the magical unicorns in action in this video). We also removed some cards that are overpowered in a 2-player version, such as Sadistic Ritual (forces you to sacrifice a unicorn each turn) and Extremely Fertile Unicorn (which allows you to summon an extra unicorn each turn).
One other modification that isn't noted in this video is that each player starts with a Neigh card in hand in the two-player version of the game. I found that this was necessary to ensure a higher level of balance and to prevent one player from being able to get out ahead too quickly because of a bad shuffle. I hope you enjoy this version!
In other news, I have a few more questions that have come up a lot that I'd like to address. I'm sure many people will see some of this information as sad news, but please understand that I am doing everything I can to keep our timelines intact for the now 13,000 backers on this project!
1. A few specific upgrades/add-ons will simply not be possible during the life of this campaign. These include a box that neighs, custom sleeves, and a box that is large enough to fit all of the expansions while all the cards are sleeved. The new box has already entered prototyping and is nearly ready for production, and any more modifications to the box will add at least a month to our timeline. As for sleeves and a larger box, these are both things that I will definitely be exploring after this project ends, and if they do ever become available, I'll definitely let everyone know through an update :) So to be clear, the box will be able to accommodate approximately 225 cards (without sleeves). The base game comes with 135 cards, which means there is space for approximately 90 additional cards through expansions.
2. The NSFW pack will not contain any humor that is political, sexist, racist, or religions in nature. Why, you ask? Well, because I don't think I can pull off any of those things without being a huge offensive douchebag. Also, I think the cards are pretty darn amusing without any of that content.
3. Many have asked if the game will be available in multiple languages- my answer to this is not yet, and I'm not sure. I would definitely love to offer the game in many languages, but I simply haven't worked out the logistics for this yet. This is one more thing to add to the list of "things I definitely want to figure out once this campaign is over."
This update is a lot like a compliment sandwich, because it starts and ends with good news! We hit our next SG today, which means we owe you coloring book pages- my plan is to split the coloring book into two versions, one that is from the regular cards and the other from the NSFW pack.
We've also been chugging away at our social goals as well! Here's where we stand:
If you haven't followed the FB page yet or shared the campaign, those are both super easy ways to push us towards our next goal :) Also, we are up to 16 letters to my mom, so we are getting pretty close there as well :D
That's all for now :D Expect your coloring books and more wallpapers (based on requests) in the next update.
